Overview

In Uganda, farmers face significant challenges with poor crop yields and low income due to the underutilization of data for making better predictions about crop management. Traditional methods for identifying soil types and determining the best crops to plant, such as the hydrometer method and the USDA triangle, rely on manual processes and are prone to human errors.

These methods do not effectively incorporate valuable data from sources like weather patterns, soil properties, and historical crop performance. As a result, farmers often make decisions based on incomplete or inaccurate information, leading to poor crop yields, low income, food shortages, and a negative impact on economic growth and development.

Project

Soilla App

Our Work

Our solution is the Soilla App, a web and mobile platform that leverages AI and IoT technologies to transform soil management and farming practices. The app offers the following features:

The Soilla app features AI-powered soil analysis, allowing farmers to take a picture of their soil for the app to analyze and determine the best soil types and recommended crops. This reduces the need for expert intervention and minimizes errors, empowering rural farmers to make informed decisions for better crop yields and increased income. Additionally, the app offers IoT sensor monitoring, providing real-time data on soil moisture, temperature, and other critical parameters to help farmers manage their gardens more effectively.

Farmers can also stay updated on current market prices through the app, enabling them to make informed selling decisions and maximize profits. The app fosters a collaborative community by enabling farmers to connect, share information, and collaborate with others. Furthermore, the service finder feature allows farmers to easily locate agricultural services, suppliers, and experts, regardless of their location.

Our Impact

The Soila app is an AI-powered farming solution that revolutionizes agriculture by enabling farmers to analyze soil and receive crop recommendations through simple photo uploads, eliminating the need for expensive experts while reducing errors. The app integrates IoT sensors for real-time soil monitoring, provides current market prices for strategic selling, and creates a collaborative platform for knowledge sharing among farmers. It also includes a service finder feature for accessing agricultural services and expertise. By combining these technologies, Soila empowers rural farmers with accessible tools that improve crop yields, increase income, and build supportive farming communities, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic growth and food security in Uganda and beyond.
